Free eye test for children highly recommended
In every classroom there are, on average, 2 or 3 children who have an undetected problem with their vision. That may mean that they cannot read a blackboard, have difficulty learning to read or even develop behaviour issues in school. Sadly, these children do not progress their learning as they should and often the reason for this is missed by parents, teachers and the children themselves. Getting a free eye test provides peace of mind for parents about their child’s health.
“Many childhood eye conditions such as lazy eye and squint can be quickly identified and treated if they are picked up early because the school children’s’ eyes and vision are actively developing at this age” says Helen Tilley. “Having a sight test with a specialist optician checks overall eye heath as well as vision which means parents can be reassured that their child can make the most of their education”.
A sight test is free for all children under the age of 16 and, if they need glasses, help towards their cost is provided by the NHS. For pre-school children who have not yet learnt to read, tests are done using pictures. Helen recommends adding a regular sight test for your child into your back to school routine as getting this done in the holiday means they don’t need to take time out of a school day. For pre-school toddlers and young children an eye examination can be carried out using pictures, they do not need to be able to read to have their test.
Other ways to keep your children’s’ eyes healthy is to include a couple of hours a day outdoor play or exercise, which means the eyes get a good supply of oxygen. A balanced diet with lots of colourful fruit and vegetables provides all the vitamins and minerals needed and keeping hydrated (especially in hot weather) is important. Don’t forget the sunglasses to protect their eyes from strong UV rays!
