Meet our team

  • Helen

    Helen has been a qualified optometrist for just under 30 years. She now works part time as she balances the needs of her family with working and managing the business at Monnow Eyecare. She also is Senior Council Member on the regulatory body for Opticians The General Optical Council in London a body which ensures Optometrists and Opticians in the UK meet standards and provide safe patient care to the public. A lot of her spare time is spent on the river Wye rowing with the womens crew at Monmouth rowing club. Helen is particularly interested in emergency eyecare and is quite often removing bits of metal when local farmers have forgotten to wear goggles. She is currently studying Ocular Therapeutics at Cardiff University to be an Independent Prescriber. Successful completion of the course will enable her to prescribe eye medications directly and provide end to end emergency eyecare within Monnow Eyecare.

  • Barbara

    Barbara qualified as an optometrist over 25 years ago and she has worked in the practice since 2003. Her area of specialist clinical interest is providing low vision rehabilitation services for people with sight loss. Barbara has a PhD and has published in international journals on sight loss and she was the founding clinical lead for the community based Low Vision Service Wales. Barbara also works in Cardiff University 3 days a week where she is Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. She was previously Chief Optometric Advisor to Welsh Government.
  • Mike

    Mike has been a qualified optometrist since 1998. His clinical interests include providing eye care for children and adults with all levels of ability, particularly those who cannot communicate in the usual way such as infants and young children, children with special needs and adults with intellectual disability. He has been a tutor at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff since 2001 teaching undergraduate and postgraduate optometrists. Mike has been an optometry adviser to health boards since 2005 leading innovation in community eye health services. He represents Wales on the Council of the Association of Optometrists. In his spare time, he plays the viola with the City of Cardiff Symphony Orchestra and runs an occasional half marathon.
  • Ceri

    Ceri graduated from Cardiff University in 2009 and has been with Monnow since 2015. He has a wide experience in optometric practice having worked in large multiple and smaller independent practices. He works part time in Brecon, assessing and injecting the eyes of patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). He represents Wales on the council of the College of Optometrists, and also works as an accreditation tutor with the Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre, tutoring and examining optometrists across Wales. He holds professional certificates in medical retina and glaucoma, and is working towards a Masters in Clinical Optometry and a Diploma in Therapeutic Prescribing. Over the years, he has travelled to Romania and Uganda on charity eye care trips. In his spare time, he enjoys watching rugby and cricket, and taking his dog, George on long hikes.
  • Lisa

    Lisa graduated from Cardiff University in 2010 and joined the Monnow Eyecare team in 2016. As well as working in community practice, she works part time in Bristol Eye Hospital’s optometry department specialising in paediatric optometry, low vision and complex contact lens fitting, and supervises optometry students in their final year of study at Cardiff University’s undergraduate clinic. She has professional certificates in medical retina and glaucoma, and postgraduate qualifications in eye care for those with special needs. She is currently working towards a Masters in Clinical Optometry and Diploma in Therapeutic Prescribing. The highlight of her career so far is when she travelled to Uganda as part of charity Vale for Africa providing eye care services and training to the local residents.
  • Darran

    Darran has worked primarily in independent optometrist practices since 2009 after graduating from Bradford University. During that time he has acquired several post graduate qualifications in Glaucoma, Macula and Ocular Therapeutics and is currently working towards a clinical masters. He takes a particular interest in acute eye management and glaucoma. In his spare time he is a passionate rugby fan, following Pontypridd RFC.
  • Emily

    Emily joined the practice in January 2016. She is a student Dispensing Optician currently studying for the Fellowship Dispensing Diploma through distance learning with ABDO College, due to be completed in 2018 to become a fully qualified Dispensing Optician. She really loves helping people get a frame which suits their personality and has transformed the frame selection at Monnow. In her spare time she likes the Gym, running, knitting, crafts.
  • Roberta

    Roberta studied optical management at Anglia Ruskin university and graduated in 2012. She has had many years experience in various opticians throughout the uk over the course of 12 years. Roberta has a passion for people and a well fitting spectacle is key! When she's not helping people pick frames she has two girls to keep her busy. She hopes to further her career in low vision shortly returning to study.
  • Katy

    Katy has been in the optic industry for 12 years and joined Monnow in October 2016 after moving to Monmouth. She very much enjoys interacting with the patients in the many roles she undertakes at the practice and has now enrolled for training to become a Dispensing Optician. In her spare time she enjoys opera singing, amateur dramatics and glitter arts and crafts.
  • Jess

    Jess Horler has worked part-time as a member of the reception team at Monnow Eyecare since 2012 after spending 26 years working in Retail and HR, she loves the customer interaction and enjoys expanding her knowledge and interest in optics. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, renovating her house and garden.
  • Marilyn

    Marilyn has been with Monnow Eyecare since May 2015. She enjoys working in a professional and friendly practice. She loves all aspects of her job, especially the interaction with patients and really likes working with a younger team and feels that they have changed her outlook on life for the better. Her interests are: Agincourt WI, Cooking, Socialising with friends and spending quality time with her family especially her 3 grandchildren. Marilyn would love to have the opportunity to travel more also.
  • Jill

    Jill is our newest member of our front of house team joining us in January 2017. She comes to us with many years of customer service experience in the garage industry. She is an active member of Monmouth rowing club and takes part in rowing and running competitively.
  • Nina

    Nina is our Saturday assistant. She is studying for her A'levels and is aiming to be a primary school teacher. When she is not studying she helps at a local brownies pack and plays Netball competitively in the Wye Valley league
  • Fliss

    Fliss has worked at Monnow Eyecare since 2008 as the full time member of the reception team, in 2010 she qualified as an Ophthalmic Dispensing Assistant and an Optometric Clinical Assistant, she has great customer facing skills and enjoys all her interactions with the patients. In her spare time she enjoys gardening, walking and socializing with her friends.
