Meet our team

  • Helen

    Helen has been a qualified optometrist for just under 30 years. She now works part time as she balances the needs of her family with working and managing the business at Monnow Eyecare. Recently she has done a two year diploma in therapeutics which has enabled her to register as an independent prescriber.She also is Senior Council Member on the regulatory body for Opticians The General Optical Council in London a body which ensures Optometrists and Opticians in the UK meet standards and provide safe patient care to the public. A lot of her spare time is spent on the river Wye rowing with the womens crew at Monmouth rowing club. Helen is particularly interested in emergency eyecare and is quite often removing bits of metal when local farmers have forgotten to wear goggles. The recent course she has completed will enable her to prescribe eye medications directly and provide end to end emergency eyecare within Monnow Eyecare.

  • Barbara

    Barbara qualified as an optometrist over 25 years ago and she has worked in the practice since 2003. Her area of specialist clinical interest is providing low vision rehabilitation services for people with sight loss. Barbara has a PhD and has published in international journals on sight loss and she was the founding clinical lead for the community based Low Vision Service Wales. Barbara also works in Cardiff University 3 days a week where she is Professor of Postgraduate Taught Programmes in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. She was previously Chief Optometric Advisor to Welsh Government. In the 2019 New Years Honours, Barbara was awarded the MBE for services to Optometry.
  • Mike

    Mike has been a qualified optometrist since 1998. His clinical interests include providing eye care for children and adults with all levels of ability, particularly those who cannot communicate in the usual way such as infants and young children, children with special needs and adults with intellectual disability. He has been a tutor at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff since 2001 teaching undergraduate and postgraduate optometrists. Mike has been an optometry adviser to health boards since 2005 leading innovation in community eye health services. He represents Wales on the Council of the Association of Optometrists. In his spare time, he plays the viola with the City of Cardiff Symphony Orchestra and runs an occasional half marathon.
  • Emma

    Emma is a keen, young optometrist who has spent the last few years embedding herself in the world of optometry. Straight after qualifying she gained further qualifications in the Welsh Eye Care Scheme. She has since run specialist Glaucoma clinics, specialist Macular Degeneration clinics and acute eye conditions clinics. She plans on further study in the near future. She has a keen interest in education and training and has worked alongside The College of Optometrists to provide training for student and pre-registration optometrists. Emma is a teacher of Optometry in Cardiff University and this is where she spends the majority of her week aside from at our practice. She specialises in Binocular Vision and working with patients with extra needs, requiring specialist assessment. At Monnow Eye Care, Emma has a special interest in paediatric care and acute eye problems.
  • Saira

    Saira has been a qualified optometrist for over 10 years. Her EHEW qualification enables her to see emergency eye care cases, both pre and post operative cateract surgery care, further glaucoma investigations, and child paediatric care. Saira plans to specialise in glaucoma and macular degeneration clinics. She works part time at the practice, and divides her remaining time between raising her young children and additional further studies at university.
  • Emily

    Emily joined the practice in January 2016. She qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 2018 after three years of studying through distance learning with ABDO College, whilst working full time here at Monnow Eyecare. She really loves helping people find a frame which suits their personality, and has transformed the frame selection at Monnow. In her spare time, Emily enjoys running and going to the gym as well as knitting and anything crafty!
  • Katy

    Katy has been in the optic industry for 12 years and joined Monnow in October 2016 after moving to Monmouth. She very much enjoys interacting with the patients in the many roles she undertakes at the practice and has now enrolled for training to become a Dispensing Optician. In her spare time she enjoys opera singing, amateur dramatics and glitter arts and crafts.
  • Jess

    Jess Horler has worked part-time as a member of the reception team at Monnow Eyecare since 2012 after spending 26 years working in Retail and HR, she loves the customer interaction and enjoys expanding her knowledge and interest in optics. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, renovating her house and garden.
  • Fliss

    Fliss has worked at Monnow Eyecare since 2008 as a member of the reception team, in 2010 she qualified as an Ophthalmic Dispensing Assistant and an Optometric Clinical Assistant, she has great customer facing skills and enjoys all her interactions with the patients. In her spare time she enjoys gardening, walking and socializing with her friends.
  • Scott

    Scott graduated with a first-class honours degree from the school of optometry and vision sciences at Cardiff University and consistently performed at the top of his year group. Scott has a real passion for delivering high quality eye care, continuously expanding his knowledge base for the benefit of his patients. Outside of optometry, Scott's interests include playing guitar, music and football.
  • Francesca

    Francesca has recently joined the team at Monnow Eyecare, working on reception on Saturdays, while studying for her A-Levels. She plans to go to university in the near future. She enjoys the customer communication and learning all aspects of the reception job. In her spare time, Francesca goes to concerts, watches movies, and spends time with her friends.
